Your First Massage: A Complete Guide to What to Expect

If you have never had a professional massage before, you might have questions and maybe even a little anxiety about what to expect. Here is a complete guide to ensure your first visit is relaxing and comfortable.

Before Your Appointment

Arrive about 10 minutes early to fill out a brief health questionnaire. Wear comfortable clothes. Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session, but do stay hydrated. Let your therapist know about any injuries, medical conditions, or areas you want them to focus on or avoid.

During Your Session

Your therapist will step out while you undress to your comfort level and settle under the draping sheet. Throughout the massage, only the area being worked on is uncovered. Communication is key: if the pressure is too much or too little, speak up. A good therapist wants your feedback.

After Your Session

Take your time getting up. Drink plenty of water for the rest of the day to help flush metabolic waste. You may feel some mild soreness the next day, similar to after a good workout. This is normal and will pass within 24 to 48 hours.
